Global Teacher Education Fellows Program for a Global Learning Classroom

Global Teacher Education (GTEI), through the support of and collaboration with the Longview Foundation, is off to a great start in their 2017 Fellow Program to prepare teacher educators and teacher candidates to enrich education programs through global frameworks of understanding. Through the Fellows Program, eight teacher trainers were paired with eight mentors to develop resources designed for global learning classrooms. The GTEI fellows are teacher educators who represent a diverse range of educational expertise and work in private teaching colleges as well as large public research institutions. These teacher trainers work primarily with K-12 teacher candidates throughout the U.S. The GTEI Mentors are experts in the fields of education and global learning and will work with fellows throughout the upcoming academic year to design and give feedback on global learning curricula.

To inspire and inform resource development, fellows and mentors participated in four webinars focused on defining global competence, assessing global learning, using technology to create global learning classrooms, and on pedagogical practices for global learning classrooms. The webinars and following discussions are accessible on the GTEI website. These sessions provided a space for sharing information and inspired productive discussions on how the topics in focus could be implemented and adapted across various educational contexts.

With access to this global education network and related resources, over the Fall 2017 or Spring 2018 semester, each fellow will work to redevelop a course to incorporate global learning outcomes. Fellows have been tasked with redesigning a course and creating complementary resources and video guides so that the syllabus and associated materials are accessible to other teacher educators and teacher candidates in the future. These resources, once completed, will live on the GTEI website and will be accessible to the public as open educational resources on global learning.
